I’ve been sewing non-medical masks for my family. Our state has advised us to wear them when we have to go out for essential supplies.
I YouTube’d 4 or 5 videos on mask making, and kind of mashed up my own size (7 x 9 inches before sewing), number of pleats (2), layers (3). I had some 1/8th inch elastic in my sewing box, and pulled non-crease hair ties (new package – not previously worn!) out of my barrette box.
The most difficult part was waiting for the JoAnn’s order of quilting fabric to be ready for curbside pickup!

Adding YouTube link below. I cut my 3 layers of fabric to 7 x 9 inches (18 x 23 cm), and my elastic to 6 inches (15.5 cm). I found that using my steam iron to press the pleats into place before sewing really helped me when it came time to sew around the perimeter of the mask. I used different fabrics for the inside and the outside of the mask (inner layer could be the same as either), more to be able to tell my parents to wear it a specific way if they ever have to use it (they are going to put it on & take it off too many times and end up with the outside (with potential COVID-19 germs) against their face).
I have laundered the masks we have worn, and they came out great. I did touch up with the steam iron, but if I had taken them out of the dryer as soon as the buzzer sounded, and lay them flat, I would not have needed to do that.
And, of course, admission: I have been sewing since I was 10 years old.

These look great, we are still being advised not to wear masks but I think I might see if I can figure out to make some as I anticipate this will change as so many places are adopting masks in public. I have a sewing machine but never really figured out how to use it…. this might be the perfect time! x

Masks are easy because they are straight stitching. I am adding a YouTube link to a good video into the post (not sure if link would work in comment here!). I also noted measurement changes. I think we will be wearing masks here for the rest of the year. Remember, these are non-medical masks – they don’t promise to keep COVID-19 from you, they do keep any potential germs you have from others.
